The following was orignally posted Christmas morning, 2001:
MUCH OF THIS TIME OF YEAR SICKENS ME. I AM A CHRISTIAN, AND NOT IN NAME ONLY, That is, I have placed what St. Paul calls a 'rational' faith in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, and I have a personal relationship with God (Theos:' The Word') via the redemptive act of Christ. Not some TNN (the crying shows!) Pat Robinson/Binny Hinn wild-eyed, 'yer all goin' straight ta HELL' mystical, irrational, emotional, whatever dude 'experience', but a down-to-earth, practical, day-in-and-out, bona fide friendship with God. Not that I'm special, theologically I'm a Calvinist, but I firmly belive that anyone on earth can have this same personal relationship with God. And this came from a 'decade of doubt', when I read widely, studied (under recognized masters), everything from Tibetan Buddhism to the 'NewAge'movement, when I carefully examined the Bible (linguistically/geographically/grammatically/theHebrew&Greek/ archeologically (is that a word?) Higher&LowerCriticism/culturally/internal integrity/you name it...) I have seen Antony Flew debate ,and lose, (Dr. Flew is quite the gentleman, the genesis for the debate, on the Resurrection of the Christ, was suggested by Flew himself over dinner with some theologians in Dallas one evening, one of these men, Dr. Norm Geisler, is a friend and mentor, a prolific debater and author, and is, himself, a perfect gentleman.) No, my faith is not a Kierkegaardian 'leap' in the dark, but a rational, balanced, sound decision based on evidence both empirical and external, SO. Not to foist my faith on anyone else, but I do wish to encourage you, on this day which the Catholic Church wisely choose to observe the birth of Christ (hey, it was winter solstice and all, so the 'converts' would celebrate it as well, along with the live trees and yule logs, and holly and ivy that they had used for millennia, which Christianity absorbed along the way), but I do encourage you, if you are so inclined, to take that spiritual journey as well...who knows? Perhaps next year this day will mean more than gift-getting, intoxication and a fake smile plastered across your mug (not that any of those things are wrong). Perhaps next year, you too (and many of my kind readers do already), will quietly celebrate the incarnation of The Word, and utlimate peace on earth, goodwill towards all. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!

the skinny:
I've spent these last 4 years working on B.F.A.s in fiction and poetry (and, yes the English Lit and Film Studies as well...call me a mental masochist, but after having dropped out of college the first time round, spending many years in exile including a decade in construction [beats deconstruction], getting a 'lucky break' [crushed the right knee (this new age guru I saw, not on purpose, mind you, while in the final stages of recovery and on crutches, told me it was my right side because I'd been neglecting the feminine side of my psyche, to which I retorted, 'hey pal, I go to the opera', and these guys want to be respected?) and, in compensation, got university-of-my-choice-full -tuition -paid for 4 years] I decided to 'be all I could be' and, obviously, was overly ambitious). Did I do all of that grammar and form right? Who cares.Perhaps I should add that the first degree, which I got 4 years of, in a five year program, was theology and biblical studies. And studied another year with a recognized Rinpoche, an ecumenical Tibetan of the Nyingma school. And two decades of study in various religions and sects. (not sex).
Am I a waste or what.
When I started this modest site, it was for a hundred or so friends and family scattered around the globe. I wasn't expecting to write much original stuff myself, just do a quote-and-link-and-cut-and paste-and-make-personal-observation type of thing. Well, a few people stumble in here rather like Peter Sellers stumbles out of the snow in his pajamas in one of those marvelous Pink Panther movies (nobody knows what I'm talking about..?) and I've gotten a few kind emails and some of the best bloggers on the web have linked to me...so. So welcome!
I live in Wilmington, NC, about 3 miles from the Atlantic, with Gabrielle, the beautiful, bastard Black Lab/Greyhound. My perfect lover is somewhere out there (I am still avaliable, and don't mind). We both love to sleep. And yes, to howl at the moon. Thank you. Thank you very much.~dawson
